Isang San Beda, Tatak Bedista (Integration 2013)

In San Beda College, a unique tradition is set to welcome the freshmen. Integration is an initiation-like welcoming party for us. During the Integration week, it is customary for us froshies to wear various risible and embarrassing costumes to kick start the Bedan rites of passage. We are asked to wear our assigned costumes for each day.

Day 1
THEME: Native Filipinos / Indigenous People
Description: All Freshmen are to wear the different cultural attire of our native brothers and sisters such as the Ifugaos, Igorots, Mangyans, and the likes as they enter the campus.

Day 2
THEME: Muchas Grasas
DescriptionFreshmen must wear ragged clothes that will make them look like “taong grasa” before entering the campus. In line with this, freshmen students shall speak in English during this day.

What made this day challenging is that we have to walk along Mendiola or pass through the crowded Legarda LRT station just so we can enter San Beda College.

after PE class with friends

Day 3
THEME: FOOD (College of Science and Arts -street food mascot)
Description: Freshmen students must wear food costumes. Walking hotdogs, fish balls, burgers, and the likes must be seen inside the campus.

Our department (financial management) was assigned to wear the so-called kiki-yuum (kikiam) costume. HAHA! Each block must prepare a commercial (maximum of 5 minutes, no minimum time) promoting the food that was assigned to their class/department.

And the Yummy Award (costume and class presentation) 1st place goes to our block, 1AFM! :)
Ate Kelsey, Kuya Marion & the whole JFINMA Officers/Seniors, thank you guys for helping us out. Much love from our 1-AFM! xo

Day 4
THEME: RAINY TRANSPORTATION DAY
Description: Like the celebration of the annual Fiesta in San Juan City, Bedan upper class men would splash buckets of water to the freshmen. Freshmen students are to wear the usual attire of people working in transportation areas such as train, jeepneys, busses, and others. They must also bring rain coats, or anything that could protect them from splashes of water such as umbrellas and the likes to protect them from becoming wet. Alertness is needed in this day.

Day 5: Integration Proper
On the last day of our integration, there are series of challenges that a freshman must undergo to be a full-pledged Bedan.
with blockmates!
Team G forevs!! #incomplete
We're in a train-like line then we were asked to put blindfolds in ourselves, then we sat at the grandstand and ketchups, sauces, egg yolks & whites, flours and many more disgusting things were thrown to us.
 with the upperclassmen ;)
They said, Bedan culture is enviable. The Mendiola Run is reminiscent to the Oblation Run at the University of the Philippines minus the naked boys running.
After the initiation rites, we were treated to an inimitable shower called the Red Baptism where four firetrucks are waiting for us at the parking lot then sprayed us with their hose at full blast.

But yeah, not everything that happened during the Integration can be considered as funny and fascinating. There are these crazy experiences which I considered unpleasant and maybe a little bad but still memorable. I'm glad that this initiation-like welcoming party was able to promote one's confidence, creativity, versatility and brotherhood. I was able to meet new people who by the way are amazing people. I did not regret any minute of joining the fun. Animo San Beda! :D

My motivation song for the week:
Everytime I put this song, I feel like I can do everything. Hope you guys will like it :)
